Driveline teardown fails in two familiar ways: an end yoke that will not come off a splined shaft, and a U-joint seized into a yoke ear. Both are the same underlying problem β a press fit plus corrosion β and both are solved by pulling squarely rather than hitting harder. A hammer on a yoke ear bends the ear; a puller with proper jaw engagement brings it off straight.

How to Choose
Yoke puller or U-joint puller?
They solve different problems. A yoke puller draws the end yoke off the splined output or pinion shaft. A U-joint puller presses the bearing caps out of the yoke ears so the joint can be replaced. A full driveline job frequently needs both.
Match the puller to the driveline class
U-joint pullers are sized by series β automotive, intermediate and heavy-duty. A puller sized for a light truck joint will not develop the force or span for a Class 8 driveline, and an oversized puller may not engage a small yoke correctly. Check the series against the joint you are servicing.
Pull square and support the shaft
The single biggest cause of damage in this job is side-loading. Make sure the puller jaws sit evenly behind the yoke flange and that the tool is centered on the shaft before you apply force. Support the driveshaft so its weight is not hanging on the joint while you press.
Plan for the seal behind the yoke
Once an end yoke comes off a transmission output or pinion shaft, the seal behind it is exposed and is usually worth replacing while you are in there β especially if the yoke sealing surface shows a wear groove. Budget the seal into the job rather than discovering it after reassembly.

How do you remove an end yoke from a transmission output shaft?
Remove the retaining nut or bolt, then use a yoke puller that engages behind the yoke flange and draws it straight off the splines with a center screw. Avoid hammering or prying on the yoke ears β that bends the ear and can ruin an otherwise serviceable yoke.
What is the difference between a yoke puller and a U-joint puller?
A yoke puller removes the yoke itself from a splined shaft. A U-joint puller presses the universal joint bearing caps out of the yoke ears so the joint can be replaced. They are separate tools for two stages of the same driveline repair.
Do I need a heavy duty U-joint puller?
It depends on the driveline. Class 7β8 truck driveshafts use larger joints with a tighter press fit than automotive applications and need a heavy-duty puller for both force and span. Intermediate and automotive pullers cover lighter driveshafts. Match the tool to the joint series.
Can I press a U-joint out without a puller?
It can be done in a shop press or with sockets and a vise, but on corroded heavy-duty joints it frequently damages the yoke ears, and a bent ear means replacing the yoke or the shaft. A dedicated puller applies force in line and is the safer approach on truck drivelines.
