How to Choose
Match the tool to the engine family first
Barring tools index into a specific access port and ring gear. A Detroit DD15 tool will not serve a Paccar MX-13. Geared barring tool vs. turning socket
A geared barring tool bolts to the bell-housing and meshes with the ring gear, giving you fine control and the ability to hold position โ the right choice for valve and injector work. A crank-turning socket on the damper is faster for simple rotation but gives coarser control and puts load on the damper bolt.
Watch the drive size and direction
Most barring tools take a 1/2" drive ratchet. Always rotate the engine in its normal direction of rotation unless a service procedure explicitly calls for otherwise โ backing an engine up can unseat timing components and give you a false lash reading.
Pair it with the timing pins for the platform
Barring is usually half of the job. The other half is locking the engine at TDC with the correct cam and flywheel pins. Buying the barring tool and the timing/TDC pin set together for your platform saves a second order mid-job.
