Cylinder Liner Tools

Everything you need to pull, measure and set cylinder liners โ€” universal pullers that cover most heavy-duty engines, engine-specific pullers for tight blocks, and the protrusion gauges that tell you whether the liner is actually seated to spec.

Pulling a cylinder liner is one of those jobs where the wrong tool costs you a block. A liner that comes out cocked can scuff the bore; a liner that goes back in without a protrusion check can blow a head gasket a hundred hours later. The tools on this page are the three things that job actually needs: a puller that grips the liner squarely, a driver or installer that seats it without distorting the flange, and a gauge that proves the protrusion is inside spec before the head goes on.

Ferrum stocks OEM-alternative versions of the pullers most heavy-duty shops reach for โ€” including universal pullers that cover Cummins, CAT and Mack from one kit, and dedicated pullers for Detroit Diesel 60 Series, DD15 and CAT 3300/3400 blocks where clearance is too tight for a universal setup.

How to Choose

Universal puller or engine-specific?

A universal liner puller (PT-6400-C / M50010-B / ZTSE2536 pattern) covers the widest range of engines and is the better first purchase for a general heavy-duty shop. Go engine-specific when you work one platform repeatedly or when block clearance defeats a universal setup โ€” the Detroit 60 Series / DD15 and CAT 3300โ€“C12 pullers exist because those blocks are genuinely tight.

Wet liners vs. dry liners

Most heavy-duty diesels covered here use wet liners, which seal to the block with O-rings and carry a protrusion spec. Dry liners are pressed into a bore and behave more like a sleeve. Confirm which you have before you choose a puller โ€” the grip geometry and the pulling force are not the same job.

Do not skip the protrusion check

Liner protrusion (how far the liner flange stands above the deck) is what clamps the fire ring when the head is torqued. Too little and you lose seal; too much and you distort the liner. A protrusion gauge or dial-indicator bridge takes a couple of minutes and is the single cheapest insurance on the whole job.

Replacement feet and screws are consumables

The feet (fingers) and main screw on a universal puller wear and bend โ€” they are the parts that take the load. Keeping a spare set of thick and thin feet on the shelf keeps a puller in service instead of waiting on a part mid-teardown.

Replacement Parts & Accessories

Wear items and spares that keep these tools in service โ€” the parts that take the load and get replaced, not re-bought as a whole tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tool do I need to remove a cylinder liner?

A cylinder liner puller. It grips the bottom edge of the liner with feet or fingers and draws it straight up with a center screw. For most heavy-duty engines a universal liner puller works; Detroit Diesel 60 Series, DD15 and some CAT blocks are tight enough that an engine-specific puller is the practical choice.

What is cylinder liner protrusion and why does it matter?

Protrusion is how far the liner flange stands proud of the block deck, typically measured in thousandths of an inch. It sets the clamp load on the head gasket fire ring. Out-of-spec protrusion is a common cause of repeat head gasket failure, so it should be measured with a gauge on every liner during reassembly.

Will a universal liner puller fit my engine?

Universal pullers in the PT-6400-C / M50010-B / ZTSE2536 family cover a wide range of Cummins, CAT and Mack engines. Fit depends on liner bore diameter and the clearance under the liner lip, so check your engine and liner size against the puller specification โ€” and if you are working a Detroit 60 Series or DD15, look at the dedicated puller first.

Are Ferrum liner tools the same as the OEM tool?

They are alternatives designed to do the same job as the referenced OEM tool numbers at a lower cost. The OEM numbers are listed for cross-reference so you can confirm the application; Ferrum is not affiliated with the OEMs.
